What is Public Cloud?

Public Cloud refers to a computing model where common IT services and resources, such as computing, data storage and applications are delivered over the internet by third-party service providers.

Typically, these services are generally available making them accessible to any business that wants to use them. Public cloud services are managed by Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) who operate large-scale data centres distributed across the globe. Public Cloud services have become a critical component of modern IT infrastructure offering organisations of every size the flexibility, scalability and cost-effectiveness needed to meet the challenges of today's digital landscape.

Unlike private or hybrid cloud platforms, the infrastructure and resources provided by Public Cloud services are shared among multiple users, creating what is often referred to as a 'multi-tenant environment'.

What are the key characteristics of Public Cloud services?

  • Accessibility: Public Cloud services are generally available to everyone over the internet. A consumer can access cloud resources from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Scalability: Public Cloud services offer high scalability allowing consumers to easily scale their usage up or down based on demand. This flexibility is beneficial for businesses with fluctuating workloads.
  • Multi-Tenancy: multiple users share the same infrastructure and resources provided by a CSP. This multi-tenancy model allows for cost efficiencies as resources are pooled and shared among various users at scale.
  • Global Reach: Public Cloud providers operate services all over the world allowing businesses to deploy applications and services closer to their customers and end-user often improving performance and enhancing user experience.
  • Self-Service Management: consumers can provision and manage cloud resources independently through a management interface or Application Programming Interface (API) without requiring manual intervention from a service provider.
  • Pay-Per-Use Billing Model: Public Cloud services operate on a pay-per-use pricing model. Consumers are billed based on actual usage of resources providing a cost-effective solution for businesses without significant upfront investment.

Public Cloud has emerged as a game-changer in the digital era, offering the tools and resources businesses need to thrive in increasingly competitive markets. With its emphasis on accessibility, scalability and cost-efficiency - Public Cloud serves as a catalyst for innovation enabling organisations to focus on their goals and achieve greater agility and efficiency.
